As I awake on Monday 22nd February the British newspapers are awash with the headlines of the British PM involved in a bullying row, I wish not to comment on the politics, my concern is in approaching this topic from a world of Spirit with the subject matter of
‘keeping confidence’. The National Bullying Helpline patron has had to resign as ‘confidence’ was seen to have broken – the website of the NBH clearly states, “
We never share your details with anyone else. All correspondence is confidential”, I leave this to the reader to argue the merits of the resignation.
When a patient sees a Doctor, the relationship is governed by medical guidelines and the law where the Physician must respect confidentially at all times. It has been known in rare occasions where a licence for a Doctor has been revoked where there was a breach of confidentially.
The same confidentially must be applied between a Medium and Sitter. During a reading many personal statements can be garnered from the Sitter, at no time must the Reader ever divulge to anyone else what was said during the reading. In the public arena of a Medium demonstrating, the Medium must be skilled in ‘tact and diplomacy’, when giving the ‘message’. It is interesting now when attending SNU services that individuals names are no longer stated during the ‘Healing’ part – this is to comply with the Data Protection Act of 1998.
We have a duty to ‘keep confidence’ for those who approach us for readings, healings, prayer. A ‘Medium’, Healer, who divulges confidential conversation to third parties will tarnish the image of Spiritualism and Spirit. If we are aware of a colleague breaching confidence we must have the courage to deal with this matter (respecting Human Right Laws) and if the said matter contravenes SNU guidelines to impose the necessary sanctions on the individual. This is no easy task as personalities, emotions, ego, conflicts of interest will no doubt all play a part in the proceedings.
My advice is to keep the confidence in the first place to avoid the’ heartache and headache’, which will inevitably follow otherwise.
