Unless people are consciously trying to rise above their egos or they are in tune with their Higher Selves, they may tend to function mostly at the level of the ego. As the ego’s dynamics are based on lack, scarcity, fear, guilt, and giving to get, we can’t really expect people to be functioning in the world at a higher perspective than all this. So when one reads in the newspapers about, greed, fraud, theft, violence, war, it isn't really surprising. These are the direct result of the ego’s thought system, and things won’t change until we are able to rise above the ego. This requires constant vigilance, self-monitoring and handing over egoic thoughts to the Holy Spirit/Higher Self every single day.
Yet, on a more positive note, if we focus on extending love and forgiveness, we can expect witnesses to this, i.e. we will receive love and forgiveness regardless of what is going on in the world. As Lesson 126 tells us: “All that I give is given to myself.” The key to understanding this is to remember that we are all one. Therefore the giver and the receiver are the same. When we extend love, we will receive it. It may not happen immediately, but if we can extend the miracle of love and forgiveness many will benefit. “A miracle is never lost. It may touch many people you have not even met, and produce undreamed of changes in situations of which you are not even aware.” A Course in Miracles, Text, p.6.
Another principle of miracles, principle number nine, is equally encouraging: “Miracles are a kind of exchange. Like all expressions of love, which are always miraculous in the true sense, the exchange reverses the physical laws. They bring more love both to the giver and the receiver.” Text, p.3.
Love and forgiveness seem to be the antidote to the ego.
