Reports of solitary spectres treading dark lonely roads and highways throughout the world are a common occurrence. But, certain road ghosts seem to have distinctive 'hallucinatory' properties in that they possess such a bizarre or out-of-place aspect to their appearance or behaviour it immediately alarms the person unfortunate enough to witness it!
One account of such a sighting comes from a man who cut short a fishing trip on the Littlehampton coast, West of Brighton, due to the onset of a thunderstorm. Whilst driving home on the outskirts of Arundel, West Sussex, he suddenly caught sight of an eerie figure in the headlights. It was standing by the road in the pouring rain and staring at the man's car with an unhealthy air of curiosity. The astonished witness brought his car to a halt to observe the creature more closely. The figure was male, tall, very muscular and completely naked but covered in hair. He described the hair as being like dog hair. Appreciating how bizarre this figure was the man drove off in a hurry thinking that he was perhaps about to fall victim to some sort of 'set-up'. But, his natural inquisitiveness soon got the better of him and after a few minutes he returned to the spot to see if the apparition was still there. Nothing was visible - the figure had completely vanished!
Bob Prowse (brother of Dave Prowse who played Darth Vader in Star Wars) also reported glimpsing a strange roadside figure in his headlights when driving through the village of Hartley on the A229 in the early hours of 26th June, 1999. He described the figure as being a tall blonde male. It had an odd 'bluish' cast to it, and had its arms at its side - as if standing to attention. Prowse was adamant that he did not imagine the figure.
It has been noted that reports of these weird 'hallucinatory' figures frequently occur in areas that are subject to sudden outbreaks of electricity (thunderstorms) or unusual light phenomena. Are they making use of the natural energy available to materialise?
